A few years back we posted the Excel-based spreadsheet we wrote for our maintenance log, along with instructions on how to use it. The spreadsheet has continued to serve us well, and still is our main tool for managing maintenance items. While it’s fairly easy to add new maintenance items for a given piece of machinery by copying and pasting an existing line, adding an entirely new piece of machinery to the spreadsheet is less intuitive.
For those who have additional pieces of machinery to track, such as a second generator, we’ve posted our most current version of the spreadsheet that has been updated to include four “other machinery” entries. You can customize the names and maintenance items to suit your purpose, or simply delete these lines if you don’t need them.

James,
Just put N60 #67 under contract. Thank you for years of entertainment and education. Your blog has been a major resource and I appreciate all of yours and Jennifer’s hard work. TO that….I just downloaded your maintenance spreadsheet to use…again thank you! Boat is moored at Elliot Bay for the next month or two….let me know if you are missing boat life, you two are welcome down for a tour and a glass of wine.
Cheers!
Eric Meslow
Hey Eric. Congratulations on picking up N6067. We would love to drop by Elliot Bay Marina, see your new boat, and enjoy a drink. Drop me a note at jrh@mvdirona.com and will set something up.
Hi James/Jennifer,
I have been following your blog since you took delivery of Dirona in hopes of one day following in your wake. That day has finally arrived – sort of, unfortunately, we were not able to buy the Nordhavn of our dreams, but we did purchase a Mikelson 50SF that will suit our coastal cruising dreams throughout the Americas.
I have been waiting for the day I could put your Maintenance Schedule to use and am ready to start our journey. However, I am unable to download it into Numbers (Mac – I know) with all of the formulas. I suspect you created it with Excel. Is that correct?
I hope you are pursuing your next endeavor in good health and spirits. Happy Thanksgiving.
Your plans sound excellent and the Mikelson looks like a good, strong boat. The spreadsheet is a reasonably complex Excel spreadsheet and it wouldn’t surprise me if it only ran in Excel. Hopefully you’ll find a solution you like.
This is AMAZING!!! Thank you!!!
We’re glad that Maintenance spreadsheet is working out for you. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks a lot. I have a goal to adopt this one to my own boat one day.
Thanks for the updated spreadsheet James…hope you and Jennifer had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
