Stateroom layout |
The 4087 has excellent stateroom
flexibility, sleeping up to eight in three private staterooms, plus the
dinette converts to a fourth double bed. The master is aft, with an
ensuite shower, separate head, and sink between with mirrored medicine cabinet. We prefer an aft master over a forward
master. Aft masters tend to be more spacious and quieter, with less noise
from water splashing against the hull.
Forward are two staterooms, each with double beds and separate entries, that
share a large hanging locker and a head with a built-in shower. This layout provides privacy
between the master and guest staterooms and makes the boat an excellent
choice for two cruising couples or those cruising with children. |

Power |
Dirona is powered by twin 270HP
B-series Cummins diesel engines.
Two engines gives confidence in redundancy, good maneuverability, and
increased speed when needed. The 270Bs are low-stressed members of the
B-series family, which has a great service record, reasonable part prices,
and a
reputation for longevity (see
www.boatdiesel.com). We've not had a single engine failure.
We use Dirona
like a trawler, where long engine life is unremarkable, and run at
displacements speeds for maximum engine life. We have logs of every
gallon of fuel the engines have burned, and the average burn rate is
just under 4 gallons per hour. In other words,
in our usage these 270HP engines are averaging outputs of 80HP.
Engine load
is a better measure of usage and expected life then operating hours, but
since hours are more commonly used, our 15,800 gallons per engine over 4,100
hours is comparable to 1,100 hours if run
predominately at a typical 20-knot cruising speed (burning 13.5 gallons
per hour per engine).
The engines have been meticulously maintained by
a knowledgeable and capable mechanic. A cleaner engine room would be difficult to find. All maintenance has been performed on or before schedule, and a
complete service record is available for all work done on board. The engine
room has good accessibility through a variety of points: the salon floor
lifts off in two pieces, two hatches are in the mid stateroom, and a large
hatch and removable steps are in the aft stateroom.
Engine-related upgrades include
a Groco oil change pump, allowing more effective oil changes,
ISSPRO pyrometers and turbo boost gauges,
Aetna 8402-B-SH
digital tachometers gauges, engine exhaust temperature alarms, and prop

Navigation |
The 4087 has full lower and flybridge helms,
both with good visibility, particularly from the upper helm for close
quarters maneuvering. Dirona has a complete set of navigation
electronics at both helms. Upgrades include a Standard Horizon VHF radio
with external speaker and Raytheon L750 fishfinder at the lower helm, a 4kW Raytheon radar, an R70 Radar Display at
the upper helm that repeats to lower helm, and an R70RC Radar/Chartplotter
CRT display at the lower helm that repeats to the upper helm. Both helms
have laptop mounts with GPS and 12-volt power source. The lower helm has
a 19" display with remote keyboard for
navigation and entertainment.
Also installed is a Raymarine autopilot with S2
core pack, type 2 hydraulic pump, ST7000 controller at lower helm, and S100
wireless remote. |

Rigged for year-round and longer-term cruising |
Dirona has cruised the
West Coast of Vancouver Island, the
mid-coast inlets, extensively in Queen Charlotte Sound,
and in the winter to
Desolation Sound
and as as far north as the
Broughtons.
This kind of cruising requires good equipment and self-sufficiency.
The on-board systems are highly-redundant and an extensive
spare parts inventory that includes windlass motor, raw water pump, alternator, furnace
head, macerator pump, raw water pump and fresh water pump. Dirona
carries an extra house propane tank, plus two additional tanks for the BBQ
in an extra propane locker on the aft deck.
Also installed is a
Webasto 2010
45,000 BTU diesel furnace distributes heat
throughout vessel. The furnace includes a hot-water heater for hot showers
without running the engines or needing shore power.
The 4087 has copious storage throughout in cupboards
and accessible void spaces, plus a very large storage area in the
cockpit lazarette. Also, the mid stateroom berth easily removes to
convert the stateroom into a storage room. Large storage areas also are
under all three stateroom berths. |

Electrical |
For quiet time at anchor, Dirona has a high-capacity 1,125-amp-hour battery bank
system made up of 10 golf-cart
batteries and a Xantrex Freedom 30 3000-watt inverter.
The engine charging
system is tuned for this installation and will charge the bank in a
couple of
hours of run time. The system is also rigged for convenient
portable power generation.
Upgrades also include a digital voltage display, visible throughout
the salon. |

Galley |
The 4087 has a full up galley with that includes a Princess propane 3-burner
range and
oven, a Norcold 6.3 cu. ft (110v/12v) refrigerator with freezer, GE
microwave oven and a double sink. Storage space is excellent in several
cupboards and draws, plus a void space has been opened to create a large
garbage cupboard. |

Ground tackle |
Dirona has a 66-pound Bruce main anchor, a
29-pound Guardian for a stern or tandem anchor, and a 25-pound Danforth-style
as backup. The main anchor rode is 200' of 5/16" Hi Test chain with 300
feet of 5/8" line. The stern anchor rode is 300' of 5/8" line with 10' of
chain. An additional backup rode of 300' of 5/8" line with 40' of chain
also is included.
The windlass is Lewmar Concept 1 with an upgraded higher-output motor over
the standard install.
Also included is a
stern tie system
with messenger line. The main line is 600 feet of 1/2-inch yellow
polypropylene rope wound on a plastic reel. The messenger line is 300 feet
of 3/16-inch polypropylene rope wound on a smaller spool. Each reel has a
PVC pipe through the center with "T" ends. The PVC pipes act as spindles.
The units slip onto the cockpit handrails, one above the other, and the
reels spin to pay out or retract the line. Both spindles are removable to
make the reels easier to stow. |

Outdoor entertainment |
The 4087 has multiple outdoor entertainment options at the
large aft deck, flybridge, cockpit and the bow. A Kuuma 13,000-BTU BBQ,
mounted on the aft deck, is included. |
