An International Fall

Click for larger image

This past fall we visited eight counties on three continents, starting and ending with ocean cruises. We began the season in Norway, first in Oslo and then in Longyearbyen, before a trans-Arctic cruise across the top of the planet, where we became one of the fewer than one thousand people who have stood at the North Geographic Pole, the North Magnetic Pole (pictured above) and the North Pole of Inaccessibility. Most of that trip was spent far from the nearest land, but we did venture “ashore” many times on frozen international waters.

Our second continent and country was Australia, for a crazy weekend trip to Peats Bite to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary and Jennifer’s 60th birthday. Canada was the third country, where we spent time in Ottawa with family and one of our past university professors. And we closed the season on a Caribbean cruise to St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Dominica, Barbados and Antigua.

In between we attended many sporting events, including our first Seattle Mariners baseball playoff game and several Seattle Kraken NHL games and Seattle Seahawks NFL football matches.

Below are highlights from Aug 30th through Nov 30th, 2025. Click any image for a larger view, or click the position to view the location on a map. And a map with our most recent log entries always is available at mvdirona.com/maps.

Oslo

Despite living in Norway for many months aboard Dirona, we never reached Oslo. The farthest east we sailed was Farsund (where we were frozen in the ice for several weeks). We finally reached Norway’s capital as part of our trans-arctic trip across the top of the planet.

Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen has a real off-the-edge of civilization feel to it. The capital of Svalbard, a mountainous, remote and glacier-covered Norwegian archipelago situated halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Longyearbyen sees constant daylight in the summer and complete darkness in the winter. Snowmobiles, the main form of transport for much of the year, litter the town during the few snow-free months.

Return to the North Pole

We’re excited to back at the North Pole aboard Le Commandant Charcot, two years after first arriving. Both trips started in Svalbard, but instead of disembarking in Iceland as we did last time, we’ll continue breaking ice to the Magnetic North Pole and across the top of the planet to disembark in Nome, Alaska. What an adventure!

Mariners vs Tigers

Attending our first Seattle Mariners baseball playoff game. The stadium is sold out on a Saturday night as the Mariners take on the Detroit Tigers for game 1 of the American League Division Series. We lost this game, but the Mariners went on to win the series 3-2 and are currently 1-0 against the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League Championship Series. Winning that will take them to the World Series.

Seahawks vs Bucaneers

Seahawks legends Brandon Mebane, Mack Strong, John Harris, Michael Sinclair and Fredd Young hoist the 12th-man flag before the Seahawks take on the Tampa Bay Bucaneers. In American football, the 12th man represents the fans and Seattle has a particularly vocal group, known as the “12s”, who have set the Guinness World Record for loudest crowd noise at a sporting event on two occasions. Sadly, our cheering wasn’t enough to beat the Bucaneers, who won 38-35 in a closely contested match.

Ottawa, Canada has played a big part in our lives. James lived in Canada’s capital for much of his formative years, and we first shared an apartment together there in 1984 during a Co-Op student work term. When we lived in Toronto in the 1990s, we often visited for the Winterlude winter festival. But we’ve not returned for decades. We were drawn back recently to visit with Dr. David Parnas, our software engineering professor at the University of Victoria (UVic).

Belmar

James taking a VO2 max test at Belmar Cardiopulmonary Diagnostics in Bellevue. We normally do the test on a treadmill, but Belmar was curious to compare our treadmill results with a bike. Our results came in slightly lower. We’re not yet sure which test method we prefer but many of the pros prefer the bike as a simpler and more repeatable test method since the tester can control watts directly using a single input

This is our second time testing at Belmar and we much prefer their service over what we were using, Dexafit in Seattle. The Belmar advantages are better quality medical grade equipment, just about identical to that used by the UofW diagnostic program, coupled with a super-knowledgeable staff including a medical doctor. It’s a remarkably good service.

Instead they diverted course from Greenland to pass through the Panama Canal to Los Angeles, Vancouver and Seattle. The ship now is en route to San Francisco and will pass back through the Panama Canal on its original route.

Meile investigating the issue with our new washer. It turned out a hose clamp was loose, resulting in a leak. Steak Dinner

Jennifer cooking steak and Brussels sprouts for dinner while James is traveling. Our apartment complex prohibits propane barbecues, so we’ve been experimenting with different ways of grilling without one. The apartment does have a very nice Miele range (seen here) with a built-in gas grill, but it’s a hassle to clean. We’ve had good luck with a grill pan, but this time she tried a new recipe that involves pan-searing the steak in a non-stick skillet. The meat turned out wonderfully, perfectly browned on the outside and medium rare inside from edge to edge. This recipe definitely is a keeper.

Point Ruston, near Tacoma, is an easy weekend getaway for us at only a 60- to 90-minute drive from our apartment. We really like the Water View Suites at the Silver Cloud Hotel, pictured, with their sweeping view to Commencement Bay and Point Ruston. Something of interest is always happening, either on the water or the pedestrian path beneath the window. The hotel also has a large and well-equipped gym for our morning workout, and several good restaurants are nearby. Other local diversions include the Ruston Way Waterwalk, the town of Ruston, the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, and Fort Nisqually.

Maiz was holding a “Noches de Despecho Latino” (“Latin Nights of Heartbreak/Sorrow”) event where karaoke of love and heartbreak songs is a central theme. Many people had microphones and were enthusiastically belting out songs in Spanish. It was kind of fun to land in the middle of it all unexpectedly.

But lots of season still remains.

Caribbean Cruise on the Celebrity Ascent

We’ve taken several trips with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), and really enjoy the experience of The Haven, a ship-within-a-ship concept that NCL pioneered in 2005 and many other cruise lines have since duplicated. Haven guests have exclusive access to restaurants, bars, lounges and public spaces in the Haven area, and priority access to restaurants, shows and other attractions on the rest of the ship. It’s a way of making a mega-ship feel less busy and more intimate. Admittedly, these ships remain truly massive.

For our most recent cruise, we decided to try Celebrity Cruises instead. Celebrity also has a well-executed ship-within-a-ship concept, The Retreat, with similar amenities. In comparing the two, NCL bested Celebrity in several areas: the Celebrity Ascent has limited outdoor dining compared to the NCL ships, doesn’t have diversions such as water slides and go-kart racing, and the Retreat lounge and restaurant were rather uninspiring. But despite these drawbacks, we ended up preferring the Celebrity experience more.
