The annual MARS conference, hosted by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is a cross-domain event aimed at sharing ideas across the rapidly growing fields of Machine Learning, Automation, Robotics, and Space. Hands-on learning and emerging technology demonstrations form the majority of the invitation-only event, with opportunities for attendees to meet and learn from each other.

MARS usually is held outside Santa Barbara, California but this year’s event took place at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando, with one day spent on the Space Coast at the Valiant Air Command Warbird museum and the Kennedy Space Center.

We arrived into Orlando a day early for the conference to spend a day at Walt Disney World. We only had time for one of the four theme parks there, and picked EPCOT. We’d visited there once way back in 1993, but many of the attractions were new since then. We had a great day at Disney World, and James really enjoyed the MARS conference the following week, particularly the space displays and the many vehicle- and transport-oriented demonstrations.

Below are highlights from March 22nd through 26th, 2025. Click any image for a larger view, or click the position to view the location on a map. And a map with our most recent log entries always is available at mvdirona.com/maps.

Kingsley Lake

Although it looks manmade, Kingsley Lake in northern Florida is in fact a natural formation. The nearly perfect circle is a water-filled sinkhole. We’re heading to Orlando for James to attend the 2025 MARS conference, highlighting advances in Machine learning, Automation, Robotics, and Space.

EPCOT

We arrived into Orlando a day early for the 2025 MARS conference to spend a day at Disneyworld. We only had time for one of the four theme parks there, and picked EPCOT. Just inside the entrance is the geodesic sphere which has been a symbol of the park since it opened in 1982. Science fiction writer Ray Bradbury contributed to the design of the sphere, and the Spaceship Earth ride inside it.

Iguazu Falls

The first ride we took the flight motion simulator Soarin’ Around the World, which uses a mechanical lift system and artificial wind and scents to effectively simulate a hang-gliding trip over dramatic locations around the planet. We’d been to a surprising number of the places included in the ride, including Igazua Falls in South America.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy is themed after the Marvel movies of the same name. The ride opened in 2022 at an estimated cost of $500 million, making it the most expensive amusement park ride ever constructed. The visuals were impressive and the ride was thrilling, particularly a roller coaster section that simulated space travel by going backwards in the dark.

On the Mission: Mars ride, guests are seated in an enclosed pod for a simulated launch into space en route to Mars. The ride uses a centrifuge to reach a G-force of 2.5, which is pretty shocking if you’re not expecting it.

It’s a slow time of year, but the massive stroller parks in front of every attraction give a clue to the large number of people in each building.

Our final “ride” at Disneyworld was on the monorail to the Disney transportation center, where we got a cab back to our hotel. The monorail ride was enjoyable, giving us an elevated view to EPCOT and the surrounding area.
